CREDITON-based Ernest Jackson & Co. Ltd this year celebrates its 200 year birthday, having been in business since 1817!
Back then, the cobbled Crediton High Street was home to regular farmers’ markets, supporting the local wool and tanning trades.
But, in a few small rooms behind No 29, a pharmacist named William Searle laid the foundations for one of the UK’s longest-serving healthcare manufacturers.
Challenged to prescribe “something effective but soothing” for troublesome sore throats, Searle decided to help his neighbours by producing his own medicinal lozenges, which he sold from his chemists at the same address.
